Hudson Historical Society

The Hudson Historical Society (HHS) is proud to announce that Hudson resident Bruce Grainger will be giving our March meeting presentation based on Leon A. Robidoux's excellent book ‘The Raftsmen of the Ottawa and St. Lawrence Rivers.’ For roughly a century during the 1800s, a large timber trade existed in Ontario and Quebec. Huge rafts of timber were built and the raftsmen, who also lived onboard the rafts, took them down the Ottawa and St. Lawrence Rivers to Quebec City. During the later years of the 19th century, the greater part of the timber trade shifted to the United States and railways gradually replaced transportation by water. Please join us March 9, 7:30 p.m., 642 Main Road in Hudson for what will be a very interesting talk on an industry that directly impacted our region.
