Selected athletes from Île-Perrot-based Les Gymnastes de L’Île took part in the 2019 Canadian Championships in Acrobatic Gymnastics which was held on June 21 to June 23 at the Glen Abbey Community Centre in Oakville, Ontario.
The event was a significant competitive opportunity at the national level for showcasing top provincial talent in numerous categories. Approximately 185 gymnasts attended from clubs from Quebec, Ontario, and Alberta. Once again, athletes from the Les Gymnastes de L’Ile rose to the occasion.
At the level JO7, Jenna Ganis and Guydgie Elisha Julien won silver, and Justine Yu and Riley Vathis earned fourth place ribbons. At the Youth level mix pair, Marcus Grandison and Emilie Pominville won gold and at the Youth level women's pair, Felicity Ho and Tündi Harris earned fourth place ribbons. FIG 11-16 trio Florence Livingston, Amy Partington and Clare Partington also earned fourth place ribbons. Alongside the Canadian Championships, the 2019 Oakville Friendship Cup was held where JO level 5 and 6 athletes had the opportunity to compete.
At the level JO5 pair, Ciara Woods and Glory Tsoukalas won bronze, and Sara Naylor and Elisabeth Aleksandrov earned fourth place ribbons.
At the level JO6, Raphaelle-Lily Masson and Timea Harris brought home the bronze medal.
The impressive results were well-earned and are a credit to the hard work of not only the athletes, but also the team’s coaches, Eva Rucka and Andrzej Cichalewski, and the parents who support them along the way.
During the competition, Coaches Eva and Andrzej were acknowledged as being the pioneers of the sport in Canada and received awards. For the past 20 years, they have worked tirelessly to see the team through many milestones, including performing for the first time at the Quebec Championships in 2008, and becoming recognized as an official sport by Gymnastique Quebec in 2010.
For those unfamiliar with the sport, Acrobatic Gymnastics is an internationally growing form of gymnastics where competitors perform highly theatrical floor routines in men’s and women’s pairs, mixed pairs, and groups. The routines are set to music and can involve a combination of lifts and balance moves, as well as dynamic throws and catches.
Registration for the fall session will be starting on August 29. Les Gymnastes de L’Île offers recreational lessons and trains a competitive team that participates in provincial, national and international events. The competitive team is ranked at the top of its league both in Quebec and Canada. For more information, please contact email@example.com.
