St. Lazare Mustangs sacrifice sleep to play in Valleyfield

The St. Lazare Atom A Mustangs savour their achievement after a second place finish in Dollard-des-Ormeaux.

The St. Lazare Mustangs put in a great performance to become semi-finalists at the Valleyfield Classic Pee Wee A Provincial Baseball Tournament, which took place over four days from Thursday, July 5 to Sunday, July 8.

The path to the semis was dramatic. The Mustangs racked up two solid early wins, first against the Beloeil Braves (9 – 5), and then over the Lachute Dodgers (8 – 6). Late Saturday night, the team of 12 and 13-year-olds suffered a tough 3 – 7 loss to the Gatineau Patriotes in the third round, putting their standing in peril.

The Mustangs (and their parents) then showed their true spirit and commitment. The game against the Patriotes finished at 11:30 p.m., and they did not yet know if they had made it through to the next round. When all results were in and points were tallied, the word came down at 12:30 a.m. Sunday that they still had a shot. Parents were notified by 1 a.m. and the full team was on the field and ready to play in Valleyfield at 8:30 a.m. that same day.

The St. Lazare Pee Wee A Mustangs are all smiles in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield on a weekend where they dug deep to show what they can do.

After a late night and an early start the Mustangs gave their all, but in the end finished with a close 7 – 8 loss in a tightly contested game against the Valleyfield Red. They can all be proud of their determination and effort.

The weekend’s result – on the heels of an appearance in the finals by the Atom A Mustangs to challenge the defending champions from Boucherville at the Dollard Provincial Tournament the week before – makes it clear we won’t have to lose any sleep over whether there’s more exciting action in store from the St. Lazare Mustangs Baseball program this summer!
