The official opening and one-year anniversary of the 12-storey Sélection Vaudreuil seniors’ complex in Vaudreuil-Dorion was celebrated during a special ceremony that attracted local politicians and two former Montreal Canadiens alumni last Wednesday, June 20.

Vaudreuil Liberal MNA Marie-Claude Nichols, Mayor Guy Pilon, hockey legends Phil Goyette, an ex-centre who has a street named after him in Vaudreuil-Dorion, and Yvon Lambert, noted for scoring 200 goals in eight seasons with the Habs, participated in the event.

Important demographic

For Nichols, the inauguration and anniversary of Sélection Vaudreuil symbolize the increasingly important demographic that retirees are bringing into the provincial riding. It enables her to meet with constituents to hear their concerns.

“The richness of the living environments that Sélection Retraite creates enables retirees to maintain healthy and active lifestyles. As the MNA for Vaudreuil, it gives me immense pleasure to meet and interact with the residents. It allows me to learn about the lives of retirees which helps me to represent them in the National Assembly,” said Nichols.

Ideal venue for retirees

With the official ground-breaking for the new regional super hospital scheduled for 2022, its close proximity to current and future medical services, public transportation and a wide selection of nearby shopping outlets, Sélection Vaudreuil’s location makes it an ideal venue for retirees to consider because of its convenience, said Mayor Pilon.

The city established, and have maintained, an excellent relationship with Sélection Vaudreuil representatives during the pre- and post-construction phases, said Pilon. He’s also pleased with their community involvement by supporting organizations such as Héma-Québec and the Carrefour Jeunesse Emploi.

Community involvement

“I salute the entire Sélection Retraite team and particularly Sélection Vaudreuil. They’ve created 26 jobs in the community and provide financial support for various local community organizations. Sélection Vaudreuil offers retirees from our city and other areas a secure environment with enables them to continue to live in the community,” said Pilon.

“It’s a very well located building. We are very happy too that some people from outside Vaudreuil-Dorion are coming here for their retirement. It’s a beautiful building and it’s a nice investment for the town. It’s nice to see that the people who live here are happy with the services they receive. For me, it’s a win-win situation for everyone,” Pilon told The Journal.

New friendships

The kinship that has developed among residents at Sélection Vaudreuil since its opening last year has resulted in a deaf-mute couple teaching others the basics of sign language, an ex-pianist from the Grands Ballets Canadiens organizing concerts, and another resident teaching Zumba and Aqua-Latino courses.

Sélection Retraite is a division of Réseau Sélection which develops, builds, and manages retirement homes. It has more than 40 retirement complexes in operation and under construction in Quebec. It is looking to expand its operations across Canada and internationally.

“At Réseau Sélection we put our hearts into building communities where people like to live and that includes Sélection Vaudreuil. We want to offer products that are better adapted to the needs of retired Quebecers, to other Canadians and to people living outside the country, where we hope to expand over the medium term,” said Réal Bouclin, Founding President and Chief Executive Officer at Réseau Sélection.
