In this notoriously short season we refer to as summer, it’s time to crawl out from under the quilts, blink at the surprise of seeing sunshine, and trade our snowpants for some spandex, sneakers, and cotton T-shirts in preparation of enjoying the great outdoors on our bicycles.
On Sunday, June 3, the Saint-Lazare Cyclo-Tour will once again offer two courses to choose from – either 15 or 23 kilometres – and its meandering path will lead you through the lush, tree-lined streets of the community. Those who know the town understand they’re in for a scenic treat and for out-of-towners it’s a way to discover the off-island gem known for its greenery and equestrian heritage.
Founded in 1994 by resident Michel Gauthier, the tour is named in his honour in recognition of his volunteer work and his passion for sport, writing, and teaching. He is credited with conceiving this unique family-focused event which has since grown in popularity every year.
Last year’s event welcomed over 500 cyclists, offering a unique opportunity for families to spend some quality time together and get some gentle exercise and the 10 a.m. start time will allow you to take part while freeing up your afternoon.
The Cyclo-Tour departs from Bédard Park at 10 a.m. and while the cycling portion is free for participants, the ‘walk and run’ option is not offered this year. The traditional Bryan Liew foot race will be presented later in September. All cyclists will be treated to a snack at the finish line.
Participants have the chance to win a $400 bicycle shop gift certificate by pre-registering online at www.ville.saint-lazare.qc.ca/en/cyclotour or by phone at (450) 424-8000, ext. 220 before Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. and will continue right up until the day of the event.
