Vaudreuil-Dorion seniors eligible for Centre Multisports membership reimbursement

After a citizen raised the issue that an earlier Centre Multisports promotional offer inadvertently meant Vaudreuil-Dorion residents would pay more, council agreed to pay membership holders back.
Vaudreuil-Dorion seniors aged 60 and over are eligible to receive a 20 per cent reimbursement for their annual memberships to Centre Multisports after municipal council unanimously approved a resolution to allow the refunds, announced Mayor Guy Pilon at the Monday evening public meeting on April 16.
The refunds were approved after council looked into the matter and discovered the rebate program, which began in 2015 that offered the city’s seniors a lower membership fee, had been inadvertently cancelled during a promotional drive in January. The promotion offered the lower fees to residents and non-residents who renewed or got new memberships.
The issue was raised by resident Jean-Michel Smolsky at the time who complained to council that when his wife went to renew her annual membership during a promotional event, she was told the discount was no longer applicable.
Smolsky complained the withdrawal of the discount was unfair because it meant the city’s residents were paying slightly higher membership fees than non-residents because the centre received financial subsidies through the city’s taxes.
Mayor Pilon agreed. “At first we thought there was no reduction for people outside of Vaudreuil-Dorion but then we found out it was for everyone. We always said our taxpayers had to have a little incentive compared to anyone else. This is exactly what we are doing now with this refund. It will not be a big thing for our town and our seniors will be very happy,” Pilon told The Journal.
Former Councillor Rénald Gabriele, who attended the meeting, thanked council during the second question period for rectifying the matter. He had also requested the city to provide a refund. Eligible seniors can get their refunds by going to the Centre Multisports with their original membership invoice.
