TransCanada Pipeline

Dear Editor,

Congratulations on excellent article about Energy East and the Ottawa River Crossing. (Ottawa River crossing puts snag in $15 billion TransCanada pipeline project, Your Local Journal, June 16, page 3.)

The TransCanada spokesman criticizes our MRC for not emitting permits but this is such hypocrisy! The MRC is doing its job in trying to protect the river and its citizens. They have shown good faith to TC throughout and TC has shown an arrogant disregard for all the MRC requests for the studies they need to ensure safety. The MRC has never refused permits, just made them conditional on TC providing an impact study on seismic tests. Understandably, they don't want to issue permits for tests without knowing what impact these tests could have in such a sensitive area.

TC Spokesman Tim Duboyce says that pipelines can go up to 40m under the water but I don't for one minute believe this will be the case in the Ottawa River crossing. His statement is misleading and he should talk specifically about the Ottawa River, not just waterway crossings in general.

As you say in your article, this river provides drinking water to 2.5 million people. And our local economy would be devastated without it.
