Scouts annual Sandy Beach Nature Park cleanup

On Wednesday, May 13th, the Cavagnal (Hudson) Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Venturers held their fifth annual Sandy Beach cleanup. Gloved, pulling large green bins, with family and siblings, they couldn’t wait to get started.

This year the cleanup was again registered with the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. All across our great country, some 50,000 Canadians are participating in helping rid almost 3100 kilometres of shoreline of trash. It really is incredible the amount of garbage we collected in our park alone.

Here is a partial list and tally of some of the items we found:

• 186 pieces of plastic

• 390 cigarette butts

• 90 bottle caps

• 68 plastic beverage bottles

• 46 pieces of construction material

• 4 tires

And so on.

Overall, we picked up more trash than we did last year. The cleanup, held at the end of the Scouting season, is our way of saying thanks to the community for your generous sponsorship through the purchase of Scout popcorn and the donation of bottles and money. Your support makes our programs possible. The cleanup is also a way of teaching the next generation about environmental stewardship and how we can all make a difference.

The kids got some face time with nature and did a good deed, a true win-win! Cavagnal Scouting would like to thank the Town of Hudson, and especially councillors Natalie Best, Nichole Durand, Deborah Woodhead, and Barbara Robinson, for making the event extra special by providing and hosting a delicious chili supper.

Thanks also to Julia Schroeder (Director, Parks and Recreation) and Parks and Recreation Department staff for their support. For more information on Scouting in Hudson, please contact Danica Lewington at (450) 458-7967 or check out scouts. ca for a group near you. We are always welcoming new members and offer youth the chance to try us out for free.

It starts with Scouts!
